Manchester

Only a third of seats were up in the city council of Manchester, but Labour lost 24 of the 30 seats they were defending. The Greens were the largest beneficiary here, gaining 17 seats, but Reform also made inroads.

Nuneaton & Bedworth

Nuneaton is known as a classic Westminster bellwether constituency. This year's council elections saw both Labour and the Conservatives lose ground and Reform pick up almost all of the seats up for election.

Wigan

Only a third of seats were being contested, and of those Labour failed to win a single seat, losing 20 it had held previously. Labour retains control of the council, which overlaps cabinet minister Lisa Nandy's constituency, only by virtue of the seats that were not up this time.

Havering

Reform won their first ever London council in this outer area of the capital, taking over from a coalition led by the Residents Association.

Huntingdonshire

While Huntingdonshire remains with no overall control, the Lib Dems have overtaken the Tories in terms of seat numbers in this council, which is home to John Major’s former constituency.

Newcastle-upon-Tyne

An example of a council in which both Reform and the Greens have made gains at Labour's considerable expense.

Hackney

In London's inner-city borough of Hackney the Greens ended Labour’s 24-year control of the council and gained their first-ever directly elected mayor.

Lambeth

Labour has lost control of Lambeth council for the first time in 20 years. The Greens won 29 seats, previously they had only four.

Aberdeenshire West

The Conservatives kept this Tory stronghold.

Caithness, Sutherland & Ross

SNP government minister Maree Todd has lost this seat to Scottish Lib Dem's David Green.

Carrick, Cumnock & Doon Valley

The SNP lost vote share in this area but managed to hold on due to a split vote in which three parties won over a fifth of votes. The Conservatives dropped significantly as Reform votes surged.

Cunninghame North

The SNP have benefitted in this seat from split opposition.

Na h-Eileanan an Iar

This was one of Labour's main targets, and a gain - if only with a small majority – will present some consolation to the party.

Shetland Islands

The Lib Dems' support fell by over 14 points, allowing the SNP to claim this seat.

These results are provided by the Press Association (PA). Numbers for change in seats are calculated against the state of the council or parliament just before this election. Other organisations calculate using the previous election, and this can lead to discrepancies. In Wales, the electoral system is sufficently different to previous elections that comparison is not given.

Other outlets may also announce individual ward councillor results as they become known, while PA release results for each council only when its full count is complete. PA collates results only for elections that were due in this electoral cycle, meaning there may be council byelection results in other parts of the country that are not included. There are frequent changes in ward boundaries, sometimes accompanied by changes in the number of councillors overall. In Scotland, change figures are calculated against notional results for 2021 due to boundary changes. "Shadow elections" were also held for two new unitary authorities due to be created in Surrey in 2027.
