A three-year-old girl sustained serious injuries after being bitten by a stray dog inside her home at Omallur in Pathanamthitta on Monday. The incident occurred around 12.30 p.m. when the stray dog entered the house through the kitchen door and launched a violent attack on the child, identified as Sukanya. Hearing her cries, the child’s mother, who was fetching water nearby, rushed in and managed to pull the girl away from the dog’s grip.
Sukanya , who suffered deep injuries on her face, was first taken to the Pathanamthitta General Hospital and later shifted to the Government Medical College Hospital, Kottayam, for specialised treatment. The child is currently under observation at the medical college and remains in critical condition, according to Omallur panchayat president Athira, who accompanied the child to the hospital.
Search on for dog
The incident, meanwhile, has left the neighbourhood in shock, especially as the same dog is believed to have attacked two others earlier the same day. Local people said a man identified as Rajan was bitten while out on a morning walk, while a priest walking in the area was also attacked shortly after. Both are also undergoing medical treatment.
Residents said the dog is still at large, and people are searching for it amid fears that it may be rabid. The incident has triggered concern in the locality, particularly as children are spending more time outdoors with schools remaining closed. The repeated attacks have also highlighted growing concern over the stray dog menace in residential areas across Pathanamthitta district.
Wild boar attack
In a separate incident, a 77-year-old woman, Thamarakshi, from Thengamam, near Adoor, sustained injuries in a wild boar attack. The incident occurred around 8 a.m. while she was collecting firewood near her house. The animal, which was nearby, suddenly charged at her, causing severe injuries to her left knee. Bleeding heavily, she was rushed to the Adoor General Hospital for treatment.
