A four-year-old boy who fell into a borewell near his house in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district was rescued safely after a nine-hour operation carried out by multiple agencies and local volunteers, officials said.

The incident took place on Friday evening in Chak Samana village near Bhikhowal on the Hoshiarpur-Dasuya road. The child, Gurkaran Singh, had fallen into the newly dug borewell while playing near his home and got trapped at a depth of nearly 20 to 30 feet.

Rescue teams managed to pull him out at around 12.40 am before rushing him to a hospital for medical examination and treatment. An NDRF personnel was seen carrying the child in his arms after the rescue. Though his face was covered in soil, he appeared stable.

Family members and villagers thanked the rescue personnel and hugged the NDRF team and others involved in the operation.

Deputy Commandant NDRF Pankaj Sharma told PTI Videos that the child’s condition was stable. He noted that the rescue operation was challenging because of the loose soil that kept collapsing. “Our rescuers put in a commendable effort throughout the entire rescue operation," he stated.

Officials said teams from the NDRF, SDRF, Punjab Police, district administration, fire brigade and local volunteers jointly carried out the rescue mission.

Punjab Minister Ravjot Singh and AAP MP Raj Kumar Chabbewal remained at the site during the operation and monitored the rescue efforts.

Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain said the administration responded immediately after receiving information about the incident around 4 pm. She said the child had slipped into an open borewell next to the family’s house.

According to officials, the borewell had recently been made operational and the surrounding gravel and soil filling work was yet to be completed.

Jain said rescuers first lowered a camera and oxygen pipe into the borewell to monitor the child’s condition and maintain oxygen supply. “The child’s movements were visible in the footage initially, which helped rescuers assess the situation," she said.

Officials later said loose soil falling inside the borewell made camera monitoring difficult and complicated the rescue effort further.

The deputy commissioner said rescue teams dug a parallel pit nearly 25 to 30 feet deep before creating a narrow tunnel to safely reach the child.

Heavy machinery, including earth-moving equipment, was arranged by the administration and local residents. Officials described the soil as sandy and unstable, saying it repeatedly collapsed during the operation. Machinery was used carefully to ensure the child’s safety.

Jain said more than 40 NDRF personnel took part in the rescue mission. She thanked the NDRF, SDRF, Punjab Police, civil administration, medical teams, volunteers and villagers for their coordinated efforts.

Senior Superintendent of Police Sandeep Kumar Malik praised the rescue teams and said their teamwork and dedication played a key role in saving the child.

During the operation, officials also asked the child’s mother to speak to him at the site so he could hear a familiar voice and remain calm. Oxygen continued to be supplied through a pipe into the borewell.

Minister Ravjot Singh said emergency and medical teams stayed on standby throughout the rescue operation to provide immediate treatment after the child was brought out.

MP Chabbewal called it a highly sensitive and difficult mission and said the continuous efforts of all agencies ensured the operation’s success. A large number of locals gathered near the site as rescue operations continued through the night.
