8th Pay Commission: The 8th Pay Commission has started consultations with employee unions, pensioner associations and other stakeholders across the country. As part of this process, officials of the Commission are scheduled to meet Delhi-based Railway and Defence employee and pensioner bodies in the national capital next week. During these discussions, the organisations will submit suggestions on salary revision, pension benefits, allowances, fitment factor and service conditions of central government employees. Bodies seeking a meeting with the 8th Pay Commission must first submit their memorandum and then apply for an appointment through the official 8th CPC portal.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union Cabinet has already approved the Terms of Reference of 8th CPC. Moreover, the Government has also formed and notified the new CPC. The recommendations made by the Commission will cover nearly 50 Lakh Central Government employees including Defence Services Personnel and almost 69 lakh Pensioners.
In January 2025, the Central Government announced the formation of the 8th CPC to review and recommend revisions to the salaries and other benefits of Central Government employees. The 8th Central Pay Commission will function as a temporary body, consisting of a Chairperson, one Part-Time Member and a Member-Secretary, said Finance Ministry.
Meeting schedule
8th Pay Commission will hold meetings with Railways and Defence employee and pensioner bodies in New Delhi on May 13 and 14, 2026.
The 8th Pay Commission will visit Hyderabad, Telangana, on May 18 and 19, 2026. Stakeholders wishing to interact with the Commission are required to submit their memorandum on the official 8th CPC website and apply for an appointment before May 8, 2026, along with the unique memo ID generated after submission, according to an 8th Pay Commission statement dated May 1, 2026.
The 8th Pay Commission will visit Srinagar in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir from June 1 to June 4, 2026. Organisations, institutions, unions and associations seeking to interact with the Commission in Srinagar must submit their memorandum and apply for an appointment before May 16, 2026.
The Commission will also hold separate meetings in cities across other states and Union Territories in due course.
The 8th CPC will visit the Union Territory of Ladakh on June 8, 2026, Monday. Stakeholders from central government organisations, institutions and Ladakh-based unions or associations can submit their memorandums and apply for appointments before May 16, 2026.
Notably, the last date for submitting responses has been extended from April 30, 2026, to May 31, 2026.
Who is in the panel of 8th Pay Commission?
Former Judge of the Supreme Court of India Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai has been appointed as the Chairperson of 8th CPC. Meanwhile, Pulak Ghosh, Professor, IIM Bangalore has been appointed Part-Time Member of the new Pay Commission. The Government has appointed Pankaj Jain, Secretary, Petroleum & Natural Gas Ministry as the Member-Secretary of the Pay Commission.
Timeline of 8th CPC
In January 2025, the Central Government had announced formation of the 8th Central Pay Commission (8th CPC) to examine and recommend changes in Salaries and other benefits of Central Government employees.
The 7th Pay Commission's recommendations were approved within 6 months, which came in effect from January 1, 2016. If we consider the same timeline, the 8th Pay Commission likely to be implemented around 15-18 months from now.
Current salary for Central Government employees
Currently, Central Government employees and pensioners are paid under the 7th Pay Commission. As of now, the minimum basic pay for central government employees is Rs 18,000, while pensioners receive a minimum basic pension of Rs 9,000. Meanwhile, the maximum basic salary under 7th Pay Commission is Rs 2,25,000, while apex positions like the Cabinet Secretary and others receive Rs 2,50,000 per month. Under 7 CPC, fitment was set at 2.57. Moreover, the DA/DR currently stands at 60 per cent.
