Tamil Nadu witnessed a new political dawn on Sunday when C Joseph Vijay took oath as the chief minister, forming a non-AIADMK and non-government for the first time in nearly 70 years.

Shortly after taking the oath of office at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai, Vijay made a speech and announced a new “era" of a “real secular and social justice starts now".

The CM said he represents Hindus, Christians and Muslims while thanking the voters of Tamil Nadu.

Vijay’s father, S.A. Chandrasekhar, is a Christian, and his mother, Shoba Chandrasekhar, is a Hindu. The TVK supremo visited temples, mosques and churches during his poll campaign but did not mention religion in his speeches.

Opposition parties have criticised him and even referred to him as leader of Christians, which form roughly around 6% population of Tamil Nadu. Vijay has become the first Christian to serve as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

Vijay has reportedly built a Shirdi Sai Baba Temple in Chennai because her mother could not visit Shirdi very often. He himself has been visiting the temple in Shirdi in Maharashtra for several years, most recently before the Tamil Nadu election verdict was announced.

Vijay was also seen wearing a kalava during the oath-taking ceremony — a sacred thread that holds religious significance among Hindus.
