The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may have swept West Bengal, but it has a new worry: influx of leaders and cadres from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), mostly at the ground level. Barely days after its landmark victory in West Bengal, BJP has moved to identify those TMC elements who took part in post-poll violence as BJP cadres, amid growing concerns over further influx, as reports of many TMC cadres switching sides overnight emerged.

The Bengal BJP leadership has now begun putting in place an internal mechanism to scrutinise and identify from video footage the TMC cadres pretending to be BJP entrants. The move comes against the backdrop of public messaging from state BJP leaders that the party would not become a shelter for “corrupt" or “violent" political turncoats. Hence, on Tuesday, the BJP held a meeting on post-poll violence and concluded that a large section of TMC cadres smeared their faces with saffron colour and perpetrated violence at many places on Result Day.

A three-member screening committee was constituted with MP Deboshree Choudhary, newly elected MLA Dr Indranil Khan, who also heads the Bengal chapter of youth wing, and Bengal BJP office-bearer Amitabha Roy.

On May 6, two days after the result, the West Bengal BJP came out with a statement that read, “It has come to our notice that the elements of Trinamool’s so-called ‘Goonda Vahini’ are attempting to impersonate BJP workers to mislead people and create disorder." Bengal BJP also promised “the full force of law against these criminal elements".
