The Polavaram Irrigation Project is expected to be completed by June 2026 as about 90 per cent of the works have already been completed with water storage up to the minimum drawdown level (MDDL), according to the Ministry of Jal Shakti in a report.
As of October 2025, the project has achieved 81. 45 per cent overall progress, including significant physical and financial milestones such as earthwork (90.2 per cent), concrete (85 per cent) and structures (55 per cent), the Minister said in its annual report for the year 2025-26.
“Substantial completion has been achieved for headworks (81 per cent), Right Main Canal (92 per cent) and Left Main Canal (73 per cent).'’ the report said.
However, land acquisition and Resettlement & Rehabilitation (R&R) are still pending, with 13,082 acres of land yet to be acquired, 335 habitations to be relocated, and 91,621 Project-Displaced Families (PDFs) remaining to be shifted.
Total expenditure incurred on the project till October 2025 was ₹25,263 crore, with ₹21,221 crores released by the Central Government after its declaration as a national project.
The Polavaram Irrigation Project (PIP) is a multi-purpose irrigation project located across the Godavari River near Ramayyapeta village in Eluru District, Andhra Pradesh.
It was declared a national project under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act, 2014, with the Central Government funding 100 per cent of the remaining cost of the irrigation component from April 1, 2014.
The project provides irrigation to 2.91 lakh hectares under the Left Main Canal (LMC) and Right Main Canal (RMC), with annual irrigation of 4.36 lakh hectares.
It also generates 960 MW of hydropower, supplies 23.44 TMC of drinking and industrial water to Visakhapatnam, and provides domestic water to 28.50 lakh people in 611 villages
Additionally, it stabilises the Godavari delta, diverts 80 TMC of water to the Krishna River basin, and shares water with Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
