Arsenal ensured they will top the Premier League at Christmas with a 1-0 over Everton after Manchester City briefly moved top of the table after Erling Haaland’s double inspired a 3-0 win over West Ham.
Gyokeres converted form the spot in the 27th minute of the game to give the Gunners a 1-0 win as Arsenal restored their two-point at the top of the PL.
Arsenal’s appeals for a foul on Gyokeres were dismissed just moments before they were awarded a penalty for a Jake O’Brien handball, which the Swede converted.
Leandro Trossard and Martin Zubimendi hit the post after the break for the visitors, but Everton were incensed that two challenges on Thierno Barry inside the area went unpunished.
Earlier in the day, Manchester City temporarily moved to the top of the table after Erling Haaland’s double led them to a 3-0 victory over West Ham. This marked City’s seventh consecutive win in all competitions, maintaining pressure on Arsenal.
Haaland scored on either side of a Tijjani Reijnders goal to secure a 3-0 win for Pep Guardiola’s team against the Hammers.
Despite the win, Pep Guardiola expressed dissatisfaction, calling for further improvement if City are to secure their seventh Premier League title during his tenure. He told the players, “Merry Christmas everyone, but it will not be enough if we don’t improve."
Liverpool survived a tense finale to beat nine-man Tottenham 2-1 on Saturday, extending their unbeaten run to six games and inflicting a miserable Christmas on Spurs boss Thomas Frank.
Second-half strikes from Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike made Richarlison’s late goal a mere consolation after Xavi Simons was sent off early, and Cristian Romera received a red card in additional time.
