Assam Flood Death Toll Climbs To 82 After 2 More Deaths, Nearly 1.93 Lakh Still Affected

The death toll in this year’s Assam floods rose to 82 after two more people lost their lives, even as the overall flood situation showed signs of improvement, according to the Assam Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

The latest fatalities were reported from Nazira revenue circle in Sivasagar district and Sonari in Charaideo district. ASDMA said no person is currently reported missing.

Five Districts Remain Affected

Around 1.92 lakh people across five districts—Sivasagar, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon and Charaideo—continue to be affected by the floods. A total of 17 revenue circles and 379 villages remain inundated.

Charaideo is the worst-hit district, with 77,456 affected people, followed by Sivasagar with 63,492 and Jorhat with 34,067. The number of affected people has fallen from more than two lakh reported on Thursday.

Authorities are operating 54 relief camps, sheltering 12,994 displaced people, while another 26 relief distribution centres are assisting 5,384 people.

Relief and rescue operations by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and other agencies are continuing.

The floods have also submerged around 15,430 hectares of crop area, while damage to houses, roads and other public infrastructure has been reported from the affected districts.

Cabinet Seek Loan Moratorium For Victims

The Assam government on Friday decided to approach insurance companies and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) for expeditious disposal of claims and providing a moratorium to their customers from the four districts which have been badly affected by the floods this year, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

Assessment of damage to houses, livestock, etc., is expected to be completed shortly, and the government will try to ensure that funds for repair are disbursed at the earliest, he added.

The announcement came a day after the CM said that he chaired a special meeting of the State Level Bankers’ Committee (SLBC), in which it was decided that a six-month moratorium would be offered to all flood-affected people in four districts for repaying loans.
