A woman in Bengaluru narrowly escaped a suspected knife attack after local residents intervened and rescued her when her husband allegedly tried to assault her during a domestic dispute, police said.

The incident took place on Thursday afternoon in Dasanapura under the limits of the Madanayakanahalli Police Station in Bengaluru North taluk.

The couple, identified as Sonali and Sanjay, are originally from Bihar and had moved to Bengaluru after entering into a second marriage. Both were employed at a garments factory in the city.

According to police, Sanjay allegedly used to assault Sonali frequently after consuming alcohol. Troubled by the repeated abuse, Sonali had reportedly decided to separate from him and live independently.

Police said Sanjay had allegedly been threatening to kill her over the issue. During an argument that escalated onto the street, he allegedly held a knife to her neck.

Locals who witnessed the incident immediately stepped in, overpowered Sanjay and rescued the woman before handing him over to the police.

An NCR has been registered at the Madanayakanahalli police station. Police later counselled the couple and sent them away.
