Union Minister Manohar Lal and Madhya Pradesh CM Dr Mohan Yadav inaugurated Bhopal Metro on Saturday, December 20. As the metro service commenced its commercial run on Sunday, hundreds of residents enthusiastically took rides on the first day, expressing confidence that it will save time and provide relief from traffic jams.
The Metro's first service began at 9 am from the AIIMS station, and by 6 pm, 5,731 people had travelled on the new mass-transit corridor, an official said as reported by news agency PTI.
The official further said that people, along with their family members, had been lining up for tickets since early morning.
Several users were seen taking selfies and photos inside the Metro rakes and at stations.
Rao Singh, who took a Metro ride, told PTI Videos that besides saving time and money, the new mode of transport will provide relief from traffic jams and pollution.
Another passenger, who identified himself as Chetan, said he was happy that Bhopal is now on the "Metro list".
Office-goers will benefit a lot due to the Metro service, said a young man named Akshay.
Earlier on Saturday, the Metro service was started by the flagging off a train from Subhash Nagar station on a 7.5-kilometre stretch, called the "Priority Corridor".
With the commencement of Metro operations in Bhopal, another milestone has been added to India’s urban transport journey. With Bhopal joining the list, Metro services are now operational in 26 cities across the country, taking the total operational Metro network in India to 1,090 km.
The Bhopal Metro marks a major step forward for the capital city of Madhya Pradesh, aimed at making urban travel faster, cleaner and more convenient for citizens. Developed under the leadership of the Prime Minister, the project represents a significant achievement towards smart, green and sustainable mobility, said Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs in a statement.
While the estimated cost of the 30.8-km-long Bhopal Metro project is Rs 10,033 crore, a sum of Rs 2,225 crore was spent on the 'Priority Corridor', according to officials.
The Bhopal Metro has a total length of 30.8 km, comprising two corridors and one depot:
- Orange Line: 16.74 km
- Blue Line: 14.16 km
Designed to connect major commercial and residential areas of the city, the Metro is expected to reduce traffic congestion and enhance the overall quality of life for residents.
Inauguration of Priority Corridor
The first phase of the Bhopal Metro, the Orange Line Priority Corridor, was inaugurated on Saturday.
Bhopal Metro Route, Stations
The priority stretch of approximately 7 km includes eight elevated stations: AIIMS, Alkapuri, DRM Office, Rani Kamlapati, MP Nagar, Board Office Chauraha, Kendriya Vidyalaya and Subhash Nagar.
This corridor will ensure smoother traffic flow on some of the city’s busiest routes, help reduce pollution levels and provide a safe and comfortable commuting experience.
Bhopal Metro: Train timings
A total of 17 trains will run daily. The first train will depart AIIMS station at 9 AM while the final metro train will leave at 5 PM.
A simple, slab-based fare system has been introduced for the metro service . Rs 20 for up to two stations while Rs 30 for three to five stations, and Rs 40 for six to eight stations, respectively.

- Modern Facilities: High-speed lifts and escalators at all stations.
- Accessible for All: Dedicated wheelchair spaces and easy access for Divyangjan.
- Safety First: AI-based CCTV surveillance, Emergency Communication Buttons, Platform Screen Doors and Grade-4 Signalling Systems.
- Smart Technology: Audio-visual passenger information systems and a high-tech Operations Control Centre.
- Passenger Comfort: Fully air-conditioned coaches with comfortable seating and mobile charging points
“The Bhopal Metro is a symbol of the city’s progress towards sustainable urban development. By promoting smart, safe and environment-friendly mobility, it will significantly ease daily commuting and contribute to a cleaner urban environment,” the Ministry stated.
“With the launch of Metro services, Bhopal takes a decisive step towards becoming a modern, green and accessible capital city,” it added.
