Winning a FIFA World Cup is difficult. Defending it has proven almost impossible.
As Argentina prepare to face Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, Lionel Messi’s side are chasing far more than consecutive titles. They are attempting something no men’s national team has managed in 64 years: successfully defend the World Cup.
The last nation to achieve the feat was Brazil, who followed up their 1958 triumph by lifting the trophy again in 1962. Since then, every defending champion has eventually stumbled.
Some never even escaped the group stage. France (2002), Italy (2010), Spain (2014) and Germany (2018) all suffered humiliating first-round exits. Others came agonisingly close before falling at the final hurdle.
Among the defending champions who actually reached another final, none managed to retain the trophy.
Brazil were beaten by France in the 1998 final after winning in 1994. Germany followed their 1990 triumph with a runners-up finish in 2002. Most recently, France arrived in the 2022 final as defending champions before losing an unforgettable penalty shootout to Argentina after a 3-3 thriller.
That leaves Messi and Argentina staring down one of football’s longest-standing statistical barriers.
Yet if anyone is equipped to rewrite history, it may be this Argentina side.
Messi has already placed himself among the greatest World Cup players ever. Sunday’s match will be his third World Cup final, matching Cafu’s record, while victory would make him only the second captain after Cafu to lift the trophy twice as a player.
Argentina have hardly cruised to the final. Lionel Scaloni’s men survived extra-time battles, staged dramatic comebacks against Egypt and England, and repeatedly demonstrated the resilience that defined their 2022 triumph.
Standing in their way is a Spain side that has conceded almost nothing throughout the tournament, arriving in the final after producing one of the competition’s best defensive campaigns.
History overwhelmingly favours the challenger rather than the holder. But football has always had room for exceptions.
