Minnesota Timberwolves coach Chris Finch didn’t last long on Friday night — and the NBA made sure he paid for it.
Finch was fined $35,000 after a fiery meltdown just six minutes into the Wolves’ 112-107 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. Furious over a string of no-calls, the 56-year-old lost his cool early, earning two technical fouls and an ejection before the first quarter was even halfway done.
The flashpoint came when Julius Randle was stripped after an offensive rebound with no whistle, moments after Anthony Edwards was also denied a call on a layup. Finch erupted, throwing his hands in the air and stepping onto the court while play was live, drawing immediate attention from officials.
Things escalated quickly. Finch unloaded on the referees, had to be physically restrained by four Timberwolves staffers, and even tried to double back after initially heading toward the bench to continue the argument.
The Target Center crowd loved it, roaring their approval as Finch finally disappeared down the tunnel.
The NBA didn’t. League executive VP James Jones confirmed the fine was for inappropriate language toward officials and failing to leave the court promptly.
Despite the chaos, Minnesota held on for the win. Anthony Edwards, back after missing three games with a foot issue, helped push the Wolves to eight wins in their last 10. Finch, now in his sixth season and owner of a 227-170 record, has led Minnesota to the Western Conference finals in each of the last two years.
The Timberwolves got the victory. Finch got the bill. Win-win, I guess.
