Coventry boss Frank Lampard apologised for his actions after giving it back to Southampton fans following the 1-1 stalemate between the sides in their EFL Championship clash on Saturday.

Lampard was subjected to a plethora of abusive chants from the Saints’ fans, including ‘Shite Steven Gerrard’. And the former English international hit back at Southampton fans at the end of the game that led to an on-field melee.

Championship leaders Coventry took the lead in the first half when Ephron Mason-Clark headed in Victor Torp’s cross. However, the match dynamic shifted after Coventry defender Jay Dasilva was sent off, allowing Nathan Wood to score Southampton’s equaliser.

Following the final whistle, Lampard went onto the pitch and repeatedly gestured towards the Southampton fans, prompting a furious reaction from the Saints players, resulting in a melee.

“I was probably emotional. The fans had given me a bit in the last 10 minutes and I went on the pitch to give them a bit back," he said.

“It was really out of order but I wouldn’t have had as long in this game if I wasn’t sometimes emotional on the pitch, and not a bad bloke off it.

“I was very proud of the players and then it got a bit heated. Not every game can be shake hands and smile. We live for this game to be emotional," the former midfielder said.

“I’m not a robot. I had 10 minutes of that and I think I’m allowed to have a little moment," the former Chelsea star concluded.
