A youth who fell into an open drain in Delhi’s Rohini on Tuesday evening has been confirmed dead, said police, days after a biker lost his life after plunging into an uncovered construction pit in west Delhi’s Janakpuri.
The incident occurred in Sector 32 of Rohini, near the Mahashakti Kali Temple, under the jurisdiction of Begumpur police station.
Officials said the youth slipped into a deep drain while walking along the road, prompting authorities to launch a rescue operation.
Teams from the Delhi Police and Delhi Fire Service were rushed to the spot after an alert was received, and a search operation was launched to trace the missing person.
Authorities later confirmed that the youth had died, though details regarding the recovery of the body were not immediately available.
Reacting to the incident, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Saurabh Bharadwaj targeted the BJP-led government, alleging serious lapses in civic safety.
He said two men were walking in the area when one of them fell into a deep drain, adding that even the body could not be traced initially. Bharadwaj accused the government of focusing on publicity rather than governance.
The latest death has once again drawn attention to safety failures around open drains and construction sites in the capital, especially in the wake of the recent Janakpuri tragedy.
In that case, Kamal Dhyani, an assistant manager at the Rohini branch of HDFC Bank, died after his motorcycle fell into a deep pit dug by the Delhi Jal Board for sewer work. The site was allegedly left inadequately secured at the time of the accident.
Following public outrage, three engineers were suspended, and the government assured strict action against the contractor involved.
Residents had claimed the stretch was poorly lit and lacked warning signs, barricades or protective mesh, which were installed only after the fatal incident.
