A 25-year-old Delhi biker lay trapped in an open sewer pit for nearly eight hours before his body was discovered, even though at least five people were aware of the accident and failed to alert the police or attempt a rescue, investigators said on Sunday.
The victim, Kamal Dhyani, a private bank employee working as a telecaller, fell into a 15–20-foot-deep pit dug for sewer work by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) in Janakpuri late Friday night.
The excavation site allegedly had no barricades, warning signs, reflectors or lighting, police said.
A sub-contractor linked to the project, Rajesh Kumar Prajapati (47), has been arrested and booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Police said Prajapati was among those who knew that Dhyani’s motorcycle had plunged into the pit but chose not to inform authorities.
According to investigators, Dhyani fell into the pit around midnight, shortly after telling a friend over the phone that he would be home in a few minutes. His family and police were alerted only around 8 am, by which time he had died.
Police said the first eyewitness, Vipin Singh, who was returning from a wedding, saw a motorcycle fall into the pit and informed a nearby security guard.
The guard then alerted a labourer, Yogesh, who looked into the pit and saw the motorcycle’s headlight still on and a person lying inside.
Yogesh informed Prajapati, who arrived at the site within minutes.
Despite confirming that a man had fallen into the pit, Prajapati allegedly made no attempt to call the police, emergency services or an ambulance, nor did he try to organise a rescue.
Instead, police said Prajapati contacted the main contractor, Himanshu Gupta, and held a conference call with him and others while Dhyani lay injured in the pit.
No help was summoned. Prajapati left the spot around 1.45 am, and Yogesh also fled soon after.
“Multiple individuals were aware of the incident, yet no PCR call was made and no rescue effort was initiated," a senior police officer said.
Police teams have been dispatched to Etawah in Uttar Pradesh to trace Yogesh, while separate teams are searching for Gupta, who is believed to be outside Delhi. Authorities declined to disclose his location.
