Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has sparked a fresh debate on children’s digital exposure by seeking the opinion of vice chancellors on banning social media and mobile phones for those under 16. According to a report by The Times of India , the Chief Minister raised the issue during an interaction with vice chancellors at the Karnataka State Higher Education Council.
Referring to countries such as Australia and other Western nations that have considered or implemented similar measures, Siddaramaiah asked academicians whether Karnataka should adopt a complete ban on social media or mobile phone usage for minors. As reported by TOI, he said excessive gadget use was harming children’s learning abilities, behaviour patterns and mental health.
Concerns over learning and mental health
Siddaramaiah expressed worry that prolonged exposure to social media and smartphones was affecting students’ academic focus and overall development. According to TOI, he said the government must act responsibly to protect children during their formative years.
The Chief Minister particularly highlighted the vulnerability of students in government schools, stating they should not be “misled” by unchecked online influence. He indicated that safeguarding young students from digital distractions was a growing priority for the state.
Vice chancellors offer mixed Reactions
The proposal, however, received mixed responses. While many vice chancellors reportedly supported the idea in principle, others pointed out practical challenges. TOI reported that some VCs noted how private and elite schools increasingly rely on digital tools to assign homework, share study materials and manage classroom communication.
In such institutions, mobile phones are often used as academic tools rather than purely for social networking. A complete ban, some argued, could disrupt existing education models that integrate digital learning platforms.
Policy Under Active Consideration
The discussion aligns with earlier remarks made in the Karnataka Assembly. According to TOI, IT Minister Priyanka Kharge had previously stated that the government was considering restrictions on social media access for minors.
Although no final decision has been announced, Siddaramaiah’s consultation with higher education leaders suggests the issue is being actively evaluated. If implemented, the policy could significantly reshape how students in Karnataka access digital platforms.
As concerns grow worldwide over cyberbullying, screen addiction and online safety, Karnataka may soon join regions exploring tighter controls on minors’ digital lives — igniting a broader debate on balancing technology and child welfare.
