Former Manchester United assistant coach Carlos Queiroz was appointed the head coach of the Ghana national football team with immediate effect on Monday. This comes with less than two months to go for the FIFA World Cup.
Queiroz replaces Otto Addo, who was dismissed on March 31 after friendly losses to Germany and Austria. The Black Stars, drawn alongside England in the FIFA World Cup group, also couldn’t qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations under Addo.
Queiroz served two stints as Alex Ferguson’s assistant at Manchester United, first between 2002 and 2003 and again from 2004 to 2008, with a spell as Real Madrid head coach in between.
Queiroz was most recently at the helm of Oman but stepped down last month after they couldn’t qualify for the FIFA World Cup.
“I accept this mission with the same passion and commitment that have guided me throughout my career. Ghana is a nation of talent, pride and footballing soul. I arrive with respect for its history and belief in its future," Queiroz said.
Mozambique-born Queiroz guided Portugal to the last 16 at the 2010 World Cup and later coached Iran at the next three editions of the tournament.
Queiroz has also managed Egypt, Japan, Colombia and South Africa and previously led Portugal in the early 1990s.The
Ghana start their FIFA World Cup Group L campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on Saturday, June 27.
This summer’s FIFA World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
As per a report by ESPN, the appointment is a short-term arrangement running through the FIFA World Cup and will be reassessed after the competition.
The appointment concludes a two-week search triggered when the Ghana Football Association sacked Addo on March 30, just hours after a 2-1 friendly loss to Germany in Stuttgart.
