Liverpool eased into the FA Cup fifth round with a 3-0 win over Brighton on Saturday as goals from Mohamed Salah, Curtis Jones and Dominik Szoboszlai helped Are Slot and Co. breeze past fellow Premier League side.

Brighton, who had previously defeated Manchester United in the third round, have struggled since and were comfortably beaten by an improving Liverpool at Anfield.

Curtis Jones, starting in an unfamiliar role at right-back due to Liverpool’s defensive injuries, made a run into the box and opened the scoring from Milos Kerkez’s cross.

Salah, who has not been at his best for much of the season, scored a second-half goal and provided an assist, which could significantly boost his confidence.

The Egyptian’s cushioned pass set up Dominik Szoboszlai to score Liverpool’s second goal, and Salah then netted his 252nd goal for the Reds from the penalty spot.

Third-tier Mansfield caused the upset of the day by defeating Premier League Burnley 2-1, reaching the fifth round for the first time since 1975. Burnley manager Scott Parker made nine changes, which backfired despite taking the lead through Josh Laurent’s 21st-minute goal. Rhys Oates equalised in the 53rd minute, and Louis Reed’s brilliant free-kick 10 minutes from full-time secured the win.

Ten-man West Ham narrowly advanced as Crysencio Summerville’s goal in extra-time clinched a 1-0 victory at League One Burton.

Sandro Tonali scored twice as Newcastle came from behind to beat a 10-man Aston Villa 3-1 as Unai Emery’s team missed another chance to end a 30-year wait for silverware after goalkeeper Marco Bizot received a first-half red card.

Tammy Abraham had given Villa the lead with his first goal since returning last month, but the game turned when Bizot charged off his line, fouling Jacob Murphy and denying a clear scoring opportunity.

Newcastle’s comeback spared officials from a controversial moment when Lucas Digne’s handball inside the box was incorrectly awarded as a free-kick instead of a penalty. With VAR not in use at this stage of the competition, the decision stood. Former England captain Wayne Rooney described it as “one of the worst decisions I’ve ever seen!"

Nevertheless, Newcastle equalised from the resulting free-kick when Tonali’s strike deflected past Emi Martinez. Tonali, who has been linked with a move to Arsenal at the end of the season, showcased his talent with a powerful shot from outside the box to give Newcastle the lead.

Nick Woltemade then scored his first goal in 15 games to secure Newcastle’s place in the last 16. The team last lifted the trophy in 1955.
