Filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan recently paid a visit to singer Shaan’s home, where the two reminisced about their early days in the entertainment industry. Long before Shaan became one of India’s most loved playback singers, and before Farah became a celebrated choreographer and director, their paths briefly crossed on the sets of Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992) — a film that went on to become a turning point in Farah’s career.

While Farah joined the project as an assistant director, she was soon asked to assist with choreography — and even fill in for background dancers who failed to show up. Despite her contributions, she revealed that she was never paid for her work. Recalling the experience with Shaan, Farah said, “The first movie Shaan ever did was Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar.”

Agreeing with a laugh, Shaan added, “Yes, I was there with a saxophone!” Farah replied, “And I was a junior dancer there.”

Her revelation left Shaan’s sons surprised, prompting her to clarify: “I was actually an assistant director, then became the choreographer. Every time a dancer didn’t show up, I would step in. There’s even a scene where Deepak Tijori kisses my cheek — the girl who was supposed to do it refused, so they sent me in instead.”

Shaan then shared his own memory: “After shooting for four long days, I was seen for just a passing shot in the song. It was more like a medley of three different songs.”

Farah laughed and added, “I think it was a Jatin song — I was the choreographer. The makers were so broke that they simply pushed Jatin into the song too!”

The two then broke into an impromptu dance to Jatin’s track “Deewane Hum Pyaar Ke” from the film. The nostalgia deepened when Shaan revealed how much he was paid back then. “I received Rs 150 per day for four days, while others got Rs 75,” he said.

A visibly shocked Farah responded, “You got paid? I was never paid! But honestly, what that film did for me was worth more than any payment.”
