As violence flares following the killing of a major cartel leader, questions have surfaced over Mexico’s readiness to co-host the World Cup in just over three months.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino says there’s no doubt.

“We have complete confidence in Mexico, in its president, Claudia Sheinbaum, and in the authorities," Infantino said Tuesday in Colombia. “We are convinced that everything will go as smoothly as possible."

Infantino emphasized that FIFA remains in constant communication with Mexican authorities.

“Mexico is a great country. Like in every country in the world, things happen," he said. “That’s why we have governments, police and authorities who will ensure order and security. The World Cup is going to be an incredible celebration."

The unrest erupted after the Mexican army killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, better known as “El Mencho," the longtime leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

In the days that followed, cartel members torched vehicles, blocked highways across nearly a dozen states and triggered clashes that authorities say left at least 70 people dead.

Matches Postponed, But World Cup Plans Intact

Four top-flight Mexican league matches were postponed last Sunday amid the violence. However, international fixtures have continued. Mexico defeated Iceland 4-0 in Querétaro on Wednesday, where a minute of silence honored soldiers killed in the operation.

Mexico is scheduled to host 13 World Cup matches, including the opening game in Mexico City on June 11 between the co-host nation and South Africa. Guadalajara — considered a stronghold of the Jalisco cartel — is set to stage four matches.

Another host city, Monterrey, will hold a key playoff involving Bolivia, Suriname and Iraq.

Mixed Reactions From Federations

Colombia, set to play in both Mexico City and Guadalajara, has voiced confidence.

Others are more cautious.

Portugal’s football federation said it is closely monitoring the situation ahead of a planned March friendly. Jamaica, which is scheduled to play an intercontinental playoff semifinal in Guadalajara, has expressed nervousness about security conditions.
