The Higher Education Department has selected five prominent colleges in Kerala to be elevated as Centres of Excellence under the ‘Heritage College’ project.
The selected institutions include Government Victoria College, Palakkad; Government Brennen College, Thalassery; Sree Kerala Varma College, Thrissur; Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam; and University College, Thiruvananthapuram.
Under the ‘Heritage College’ project funded by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB), the colleges will receive an investment of ₹30 crore each.
The project focuses on infrastructure development, conservation of heritage buildings and large-scale digitisation of academic facilities.
Higher Education Minister R. Bindu, who made the announcement in Thrissur on Monday, added that Sree Kerala Varma College will soon launch a sub-centre of the Kerala Network for Research Support in Higher Education, a Centre of Excellence aimed at coordinating research activities in the higher education sector across the State.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for establishing the sub-centre was handed over at a formal function held in the Minister’s presence.
