Sheikh Hasina congratulates new West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari after BJP’s landslide 2026 win, hopes for stronger Bangladesh-India ties and faster West Bengal development.

West Bengal's new chief minister is BJP's Suvendu Adhikari.
Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina on Saturday extended her congratulations to Suvendu Adhikari, who took oath as West Bengal’s Chief Minister.
The Bangladesh Awami League shared a letter on X congratulating Adhikari in a letter following the victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections.
In the letter, the party said: “In her message, she wished the newly elected Chief Minister of West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, and all members of his cabinet good health and success. Sheikh Hasina expressed her hope that under his capable leadership, the development of West Bengal would be further accelerated, and that the longstanding historic ties of friendship and cooperation between Bangladesh and India would be strengthened."
“She also wished continued prosperity and well-being for all elected representatives and the people of West Bengal," the letter stated.
Suvendu Adhikari, the ‘giant killer’ who defeated Trinamool Congress (TMC) Chief Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur, took oath as the Chief Minister after leading the BJP to a stellar victory for the first time in the state.
BJP’s newly-elected MLAs — Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Kshudiram Tudu, and Nishit Pramanik — were sworn in as ministers in the West Bengal cabinet led by Suvendu Adhikari at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground.
The swearing-in ceremony of Suvendu Adhikari coincided with the birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
In the West Bengal Assembly Election 2026, the BJP clinched a landslide victory, bagging 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly and ending the 15-year-old rule of the TMC. The Trinamool, on the other hand, won 80 seats.
