Four people were injured on Saturday after a pillar of an under-construction metro line collapsed onto a moving autorickshaw in the Mulund area of northeast Mumbai, officials said.
The incident triggered panic in the locality, following which emergency services were rushed to the spot.
The injured were taken to a nearby hospital, where their condition was reported to be serious.
Authorities said a rescue and safety operation was immediately launched..
The accident comes amid ongoing construction work on Mumbai Metro Line 4, which is being implemented by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority.
In a separate but related construction incident earlier, a reinforcement cage meant for a metro pier collapsed inside a housing society at Suman Nagar along the Sion–Trombay Road in Chembur.
That incident occurred around 9.30 pm during work on the same metro corridor, officials said, adding that no injuries were reported in that case.
An MMRDA spokesperson said the authority was taking the incidents seriously and a detailed investigation would be conducted within two days.
The construction work is being carried out by Milan Road Build Tech, a subcontractor engaged by Reliance Infrastructure.
MMRDA Director (Works) Anil Salunkhe visited the Chembur site and reviewed the preliminary findings.
Officials said construction was underway at pillar number 105C, where the first 4.5-metre section of the pier had already been completed. Workers were in the process of adding an additional eight metres of steel reinforcement for the second section.
Typically, cranes are used to hold such reinforcement cages in position. However, due to traffic restrictions at the busy junction, the structure had been temporarily secured using ropes tied to a concrete block.
The collapse reportedly occurred while temporary shuttering was being dismantled, after a metal fastener attached to the concrete block broke, loosening the ropes and causing the reinforcement to fall towards the nearby building.
