C Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has hit back at the DMK for questioning the support for the ruling government in Tamil Nadu and questioned the MK Stalin-led party over its alliance with the BJP in 1999.
The TVK said that the DMK is “frustrated" after electoral defeat and is spreading “false propaganda" against Vijay’s party.
In a long post on X, the TVK said Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin claimed that the Vijay government do not have the support of the majority of the people of Tamil Nadu and said that the DMK got only 24.19% vote share while TVK’s was around 35%.
“The Leader of the Opposition said that we contested in two constituencies because we lacked confidence. Don’t you understand the magnitude of our victory even after looking at the constituencies, including Kolathur? Don’t you understand even after looking at the defeat of 15 DMK ministers who played with power?" the TVK asked.
The TVK also referred to DMK’s alliance with the BJP in 1999 when AB Vajpayee’s government got support from Karunanidhi.
“Today, when we talk about the MLAs who supported us, the biggest joke is that DMK talks about them as if they are pure and shining. People have not forgotten the story of suddenly supporting the BJP alliance in the trust vote in Parliament in 1999. After that, people have not forgotten that they won by forming an alliance with the same BJP, negotiating and getting ministerial posts," it said.
The TVK said that the MLAs who voted for Vijay’s government in the trust vote did not have any connection with the BJP.
The TVK government in Tamil Nadu crossed a major hurdle, comfortably winning the trust vote with the support of 25 rebel AIADMK MLAs amid DMK’s walkout and Opposition allegations of horse-trading that were rejected by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay.
In its confidence-boosting win, TVK romped home by a 144:22 margin, with all the 22 naysayers being the AIADMK MLAs owing allegiance to party chief Edappadi K Palaniswami. The 25 other party MLAs, from the C Ve Shanmugam-SP Velumamni camp voted in favour of the government, as announced by them earlier.
