A major security alert was triggered in and around Bengaluru after gelatin sticks were discovered near a route scheduled to be taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the city on Sunday.
The explosives were found near Thathaguni in the Kaggalipura area, close to the route leading to the Art of Living event venue. Meanwhile, police detained one person in connection with the discovery and were questioning him.
According to sources, the suspect was picked up from a house near Koramangala after he allegedly called the local police station early in the morning, warning that blasts could occur near HAL and the Art of Living centre. Following the alert, security agencies launched immediate searches at both locations.
While no suspicious material was found near HAL Airport, officers conducting checks around the Art of Living area recovered gelatin sticks near a bridge beside a compound wall along the Prime Minister’s route. The caller was subsequently taken into custody.
Senior officers, including a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), were interrogating the suspect to determine how the explosives reached the spot, who supplied them and whether anyone instructed him to place them there. Police also questioned the suspect’s parents as part of the investigation.
Investigators said the man had allegedly made similar threat calls during previous VIP visits to Bengaluru. On earlier occasions, he was detained and later released after police found that he had mental health issues.
However, this time, officials are treating the latest incident more seriously since explosive material was actually recovered after the warning call. Police suspect that two gelatin sticks may have been deliberately thrown near the route. They were also examining whether others were involved.
Investigators are also probing whether the explosives were linked to people opposed to the Art of Living organisation. Police confirmed that the material was detected before the Prime Minister’s movement and said the investigation was ongoing.
