Amid the demand for action against the key accused in Haryana IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar’s alleged suicide case, the Haryana government has sent Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujeet Kapur on leave.
Rajiv Jaitly, media adviser to the Haryana Chief Minister, confirmed the development to The Hindu on Tuesday. “The DGP has been sent on leave. The formal order would be out soon,” he said.
It’s the eighth day since Haryana IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar allegedly died by suicide from a gunshot wound, yet his autopsy remains pending — the deceased officer’s family has refused to allow the postmortem to proceed until two key accused in the case — Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujeet Kapur and former Rohtak Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarniya are arrested. The State government had already transferred Narendra Bijarniya, the then Rohtak’s Superintendent of Police.

The officials of the Haryana government, meanwhile, were seen visiting late Mr. Kumar’s wife, a senior IAS officer, Amneet. P. Kumar here at her official residence in an apparent attempt to persuade her to agree for conducting the autopsy. Meanwhile, as leaders of political parties also visited the family of the deceased officer, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi is expected to visit the family on Tuesday (October 14).
Chandigarh Police on Monday (October 13, 2025) said that the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is conducting the investigations in case had sent a request letter to Mrs. Kumar, urging her “to come forward for identification of the body for the conduct of the PME (post mortem) at the earliest, which is essential for a speedy investigation.”
The Chandigarh Police has also asked the Haryana government to provide documents required for the investigation of the case.
In the ‘final note’ recovered from the pocket of the deceased officer, he had named senior IPS officers, including Haryana DGP Kapur and former Rohtak SP Bijarniya for allegedly harassing and maligning him, which the wife has described “as trigger points for the suicide.” Mr. Kumar (52), a 2001-batch IPS officer, was found dead with a gunshot wound at his residence here on October 7. He was serving as Inspector General of Police at the Police Training Centre (PTC), Sunaria, in Haryana’s Rohtak.
A 31-member committee — ‘Justice for Y. Puran Kumar’ — formed to press for acceptance of the family’s demands has demanded the immediate removal and arrest of the DGP and the ex-Rohtak SP. Gurmail Dhabi, who is also a member of the committee, said, “When the FIR has been registered, then why are the police reluctant to arrest the accused. The FIR in itself will serve no purpose if the accused are not arrested.”
