It’s true what they say: winning changes everything.

And for Marie-Louise Eta, one historic Bundesliga victory has suddenly turned endless scrutiny into a landmark moment for European football.

The Union Berlin interim boss became the first female head coach ever to win a game in Europe’s top five men’s leagues after guiding her side to a dramatic 3-1 victory over Mainz 05 on Sunday.

As the final whistle blew, Eta punched the air before applauding Union’s supporters alongside her players, a celebration that carried far more significance than just three points.

The win arrived in the fourth match of her five-game spell as interim coach and could not have been scripted much better.

How It Unfolded

Union looked set for a frustrating draw after Sheraldo Becker cancelled out Andrej Ilic’s opener for the hosts. But late drama flipped the game completely.

Oliver Burke struck in the 88th minute before Josip Juranovic sealed the result deep into stoppage time, sparking wild celebrations at the Stadion An der Alten Forsterei.

The result lifted Union Berlin to 12th in the Bundesliga standings and, more importantly, secured Eta’s place in football history.

Eta’s Post-Match Comments

“You’re happy, you want to win games. That’s always the case and so it was today as well," Eta told DAZN after the match.

“The way it happened was great too, how we managed to pull it off."

Despite the historic nature of her appointment, Eta has consistently tried to shift the focus back to football itself rather than symbolism.

The former youth and assistant coach acknowledged earlier this season that her role carried a “social impact," but after Sunday’s breakthrough result, she once again emphasized that her priority has always been performances and points.

“It hasn’t been about that," she said when asked how she hoped people would view her spell in charge.

“It’s been about doing the job as well as possible, getting points, winning games, and that’s what we’ve worked for each day."

Eta’s tenure with Union Berlin’s men’s team will conclude next week against FC Augsburg. She has already agreed to become head coach of Union Berlin’s women’s side next season.
