Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to take oath as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term on Tuesday, marking the start of the BJP-led NDA government’s third straight tenure in the state. Along with Sarma, four ministers and the Speaker of the Assam Assembly will also take oath.

After the NDA’s sweeping victory in the Assam Assembly elections, Sarma was chosen as the leader of the NDA legislature party. The alliance has returned to power once again, strengthening the BJP’s position in the Northeast.

Four leaders to join the Assam cabinet

Only four other leaders will be sworn in as ministers alongside Sarma. These include two senior BJP leaders and one leader each from the alliance partners, the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People’s Front.

The ministers taking oath are Rameswar Teli and Ajanta Neog from the BJP, Atul Bora from the AGP and Charan Boro from the BPF.

Rameswar Teli’s return to state politics

Rameswar Teli is a senior tea-tribe leader and has earlier served as Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries and later for Petroleum and Natural Gas during the second term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

After spending 10 years in the Assam Assembly and another 10 years in the Lok Sabha, he was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 2024. Teli has now returned to the Assam Assembly after winning from the Duliajan constituency, which he had represented earlier between 2001 and 2011.

Ajanta Neog’s long political journey

Ajanta Neog is considered one of Sarma’s closest and longest-serving political colleagues. She has won the Golaghat seat for a sixth straight term. Both Neog and Sarma were first elected to the Assembly in 2001 as Congress leaders and later served as ministers under former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

After Sarma joined the BJP, Neog also entered the party in 2020. In the previous Sarma government, she served as Finance Minister and became the first woman to hold the post in Assam.

NDA allies also get ministerial berths

Atul Bora, president of the AGP, comes from the student movement linked to the Assam Agitation. He has served as a Cabinet minister in both earlier BJP-led governments in Assam.

Charan Boro of the BPF has been elected from the Majbat constituency for the third time. He was included in the Sarma ministry in October last year as part of the BJP’s alliance arrangement with the BPF ahead of the elections.

Sarma also announced that former Assam BJP president Ranjeet Dass will be the NDA’s candidate for the Speaker’s post in the Assembly.
