Kylian Mbappé ensured his 27th birthday ended in celebration, delivering a moment of history as Real Madrid beat Sevilla 2-0 at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday night.
It had not looked like Mbappé’s evening for much of the contest. The French forward appeared tense early on, striking the post and wasting a couple of presentable chances as Sevilla frustrated the hosts. Yet, as he has done so often, Mbappé kept pushing, refusing to fade from the contest.
The breakthrough finally arrived late in the game when Rodrygo was bundled over inside the penalty area. With four minutes remaining, Mbappé stepped up and calmly converted from the spot, scoring his 59th goal of the calendar year across all competitions.
The strike saw him equal Cristiano Ronaldo’s Real Madrid record from 2013 — a remarkable feat achieved in his very first season at the club.
Jude Bellingham had earlier given Madrid the lead seven minutes before halftime, rising highest to head home and settle a nervy opening period. Sevilla’s task became even harder in the second half when Marcão was sent off after receiving a second yellow card, but the visitors still threatened. Thibaut Courtois was called into action several times to preserve Madrid’s advantage before Mbappé sealed the result.
After scoring, Mbappé celebrated by reproducing Ronaldo’s iconic “Siu" celebration — a deliberate tribute to the player he has long described as his idol.
“To do what Cristiano did is incredible," Mbappé said afterwards. “He’s my idol, the best player in Real Madrid’s history and a reference in world football. It’s an honour for me."
The Frenchman also admitted the occasion made the night extra special. “It’s my birthday, and playing at Real Madrid — the club of my dreams — makes it even more special," he said.
Despite Real Madrid enduring an inconsistent season under Xabi Alonso, Mbappé has been their standout performer. He now boasts 29 goals in 24 appearances this campaign and leads La Liga’s scoring charts once again, having already claimed the European Golden Shoe last season.
