Tamil Nadu witnessed a political transition on Sunday as Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C Joseph Vijay took oath as the Chief Minister at a grand ceremony held at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium.

Amid loud cheers, whistles from party cadres and the presence of alliance leaders, Vijay delivered an emotional and politically charged maiden speech that combined promises of transparency, governance reforms and social justice.

In his first address after assuming office, Vijay repeatedly underlined that his government would function with transparency and accountability.

He also made it clear that there would be no parallel power structures in the administration, asserting that he alone would remain the centre of authority in the government.

The actor-turned-politician also announced strong measures against drug abuse, corruption and crimes against women.

The new Chief Minister signed key files immediately after taking charge, including measures for 200 units of free electricity for domestic consumers, the creation of a special task force for women’s safety and anti-drug trafficking units across the state.

Vijay also thanked alliance partners, party cadres and the people of Tamil Nadu for what he described as a “new beginning" and the start of a “new era of secular, social justice."
