India captain Suryakumar Yadav dismissed concerns regarding Abhishek Sharma's form ahead of the team's Super 8 clash against South Africa on Sunday. Abhishek, who entered the T20 World Cup 2026 carrying heavy expectations, has had a dismal run in the tournament, perishing on a hat-trick of ducks. Even though the opener is yet to open his account in the competition, he has the backing of captain SKY, who addressed the pressing query on Saturday.
Suryakumar Yadav backs Abhishek Sharma to perform in the remainder of the T20 World Cup 2026
What can be defined as a cheeky response, Surya stated that he is more worried for the people expressing concern over Abhishek's form, and tackled it with optimism, hinting that he could launch carnage on the teams that India will play next.
"About Abhishek's form, I worry for the people who are worried about Abhishek's form. I worry about them. Why are they so worried about Abhishek's form?" Suryakumar Yadav told the media.
"I think about the teams that India will play next, because he is due to score. Everybody knows what happens when he gets going. He is trying to play as per his identity, and it happens in cricket," he added.
He further stated that the swashbuckling batter of India deserves support at this time, as he lifted the team on his own last year with his exceptional performances with the bat.
"Last year, Abhishek covered for all of us. Now it is our duty to cover for him," said Surya, with an obvious reference to his own wretched form that continued for the last year.
Thus, the statement points to the assertion that Abhishek Sharma will be added to the playing XI for the South Africa clash, scheduled to take place on Sunday in Ahmedabad at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Big challenge for defending champions India
Having won all four of their group stage fixtures, Team India will enter the Super 8s undefeated, but the difficulty will be much greater this time. India will face South Africa, which have looked like a million-dollar team till now. They will also square off against the giants of the past Zimbabwe, who have defeated teams like Australia and Sri Lanka in their journey to the Super 8, and will conclude the stage against an ever-unpredictable West Indies. With the stakes rising, the defending champions need to curtail their weaknesses, as at this stage, there is no margin for error.
