India-US trade talks continue

India and the United States are continuing negotiations on key trade-related issues, with both sides remaining engaged on matters linked to the ongoing Section 301 investigations initiated by the US. Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal on Thursday said consultations between the two countries were held recently as efforts continue to move closer towards a broader trade agreement.

Speaking on the status of India-US trade talks, the Commerce Secretary said India has been actively engaged with the United States over the Section 301 investigations and related tariff concerns. He confirmed that consultations on the issue took place on Wednesday, while the US administration will now decide the next steps under the Section 301 tariff process.

Section 301 investigations are conducted by the United States under its trade laws to examine practices that it believes may unfairly impact American businesses or trade interests. Such investigations can eventually lead to tariff actions or trade restrictions if concerns remain unresolved.

The Commerce Secretary said India and the US are also working towards finalising a broader bilateral trade agreement. He noted that discussions between both countries are progressing and engagement at multiple levels is continuing.

According to Barthwal, an American delegation is expected to visit India in the coming period for further negotiations and consultations. However, he clarified that the visit is not likely to take place this month. The expected visit is being seen as another step towards advancing trade discussions between the two countries.

India and the United States have been holding multiple rounds of negotiations over market access, tariff-related concerns, digital trade, supply chains, and investment opportunities. Trade relations between the two countries have strengthened significantly over the years, with both sides looking to further expand economic cooperation.

The ongoing engagement comes at a time when India and the US are focusing on deepening strategic and commercial ties across sectors including technology, manufacturing, clean energy, pharmaceuticals, and critical minerals. Trade officials from both countries have repeatedly expressed optimism about achieving greater progress through dialogue and negotiations.

While the Section 301 issue remains an important area of discussion, both sides appear committed to maintaining communication channels and addressing concerns through consultations rather than escalation.

The latest remarks from the Commerce Secretary indicate that negotiations remain active, with India continuing diplomatic and trade-level engagement with the US administration. The expected visit of the American team in the coming months could play a key role in shaping the next phase of India-US trade discussions and potential agreement outcomes.
