Indian Railways has introduced an AI-based system on 100 trains to monitor toilet and coach cleanliness. Here’s how this smart tech will improve hygiene for passengers

Cleanliness has long been one of the biggest complaints during train journeys. Now, Indian Railways is turning to Artificial Intelligence (AI) to tackle this issue more systematically and transparently.
AI To Monitor Train Cleaning
Speaking to News18 India, Chief Project Engineer Lakshman Jain said that AI will now supervise cleanliness work inside trains. As part of a pilot project, AI-based cleaning monitoring has already begun in 100 trains across the country.
Recently, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the level of cleanliness usually seen in AC First Class coaches will now be ensured in general class coaches as well.
How The AI-Based System Works
Lakshman Jain explained the process in detail. When cleaning staff board a train, they must first upload their photograph on a designated mobile application to mark their presence.
Before starting the cleaning work, the staff are required to take a photograph of the toilet and upload it on the app. After completing the cleaning, they must click another photograph and upload it again.
AI Checks Before-And-After Photos
Once the images are uploaded, the AI system analyses both the ‘before’ and ‘after’ photographs to assess whether the toilet has been cleaned according to the required standards.
If the AI system finds that the cleaning does not meet the prescribed quality benchmarks, it can issue a warning to the concerned staff. In serious cases, it also has the authority to recommend or impose a fine.
Through this AI-driven monitoring mechanism, Indian Railways aims to bring greater accountability and ensure improved cleanliness standards across all classes of travel.
