Iran’s future at the upcoming FIFA World Cup was thrown into more uncertainty after no officials from their football federation attended a pre-tournament event. With just 100 days until the World Cup kicks off, it remains unclear whether Iran will take part in the tournament, as escalating conflict and political tensions have cast doubt on their participation.

After US and Israeli airstrikes on February 28, Iran Football Federation president Mehdi Taj said that the escalating conflict has dampened FIFA World Cup hopes, telling Varzesh3 they ‘cannot be expected to look forward to the tournament with hope’.

FIFA is hosting national federations this week in Atlanta for pre-tournament preparation workshops, but Iran didn’t send any representatives, according to a report in Front Office Sports. FIFA hasn’t confirmed Iran’s attendance or absence.

Iran has neither withdrawn nor been banned and remains all set to play group games in Los Angeles and Seattle, with a possible Round of 32 clash against the US, though rising tensions cloud its FIFA World Cup status.

FIFA says that inclusivity remains its priority, with secretary general Mattias Grafström stating Saturday that the focus is on a safe World Cup ‘with everybody participating’.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino told Sky News in comments published Tuesday that he hopes the tournament can serve a higher purpose, saying that he wants it to be ‘a moment of peace’ and that football can help ‘unite a little bit the world’, adding that the world ‘really, really needs it’.

In the same article, US Football CEO JT Batson echoed that stance, noting that Infantino had emphasised over the weekend the goal of delivering a safe and secure FIFA World Cup with all qualified teams taking part, a position the US federation supports.

According to the report, it is unlikely Iran will be able to compete in the FIFA World Cup, with the US as one of the host countries. While Iran could request its group-stage games be shifted to co-hosts Canada or Mexico, such a move would be complex even for the early games and would become impractical if Iran were to advance into the knockouts.

As per the Associated Press, if Iran were to withdraw, its football federation would lose out on millions of dollars and risk its place in the 2030 tournament. Every team that qualifies receives at least $10.5 million (Rs 96.84 crore) from FIFA, including $1.5 million (Rs 13 crore) for preparation costs and $9 million (Rs 83 crore) for teams eliminated in the group stage.

On top of that, FIFA imposes fines for withdrawing, around $320,000 (Rs 2.9 crore) and rising to $640,000 (Rs 5.9 crore) if a team pulls out in the final month before the tournament.

If FIFA chose to bar Iran from the tournament, it could cite the nation’s counterattacks that have targeted fellow World Cup participants Jordan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia as justification.

Experts say that no matter whether Iran competes, authorities might tighten security measures in response to the conflict.
