The claim was shared by tipster Abhishek Yadav, who posted a screenshot on X showing an in-app message asking users to add their birth date.

The prompt reportedly cites “upcoming Indian government rules" as the reason, sparking online debate over whether stricter regulations for younger users are on the horizon. That said, there’s no official word yet.

Neither WhatsApp nor the Indian government has confirmed any new age-verification requirement. So far, the claims remain unverified.

What Prompted This?

While the India-specific prompt is unclear, WhatsApp requesting age details isn’t entirely new. On its support pages, the company notes that it may ask users to share or confirm their age during sign-up or while accessing certain features. In some situations, it may also seek additional details to verify a user’s age.

The platform says collecting age data helps it meet legal requirements across regions. It also allows WhatsApp to tailor age-appropriate experiences, including access to certain Meta AI features and ads in Status and Channels where applicable.

Additionally, age information may be used to enforce its Terms of Service, enhance services, provide support, respond to legal requests, strengthen safety measures, and refine privacy controls. WhatsApp maintains that this information is not visible to other users.

Once someone turns 18, or reaches the legal age in their country, their account functions like any other adult account with full feature access.

Could India Introduce Age-Verification Rules?

The reports have raised questions about whether India might follow other countries tightening online safeguards for minors.

Australia, for instance, has enacted a law banning children under 16 from using major social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, X, Reddit, and YouTube, aiming to curb exposure to harmful content and online risks. Notably, WhatsApp is exempt from this rule and continues under its standard global age policy.

The UK has also moved towards stricter age checks for certain online services, reflecting a broader global push for stronger child safety measures online.

If India adopts similar policies, platforms like Telegram, Signal, Instagram, and Snapchat could also be required to verify user ages. For now, however, there’s no official indication of such plans.

Until confirmed, the reported WhatsApp prompt should be seen as tentative rather than evidence of an impending policy change.
