Hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to conserve fuel during his address in Hyderabad on May 10 amid rising concerns over global oil supply disruptions linked to the Iran crisis, one phrase has quickly returned to India’s corporate vocabulary: Work From Home.

The appeal has revived memories of the Covid-era shift that transformed how India worked almost overnight. This time, however, the conversation is not about a pandemic — it is about fuel conservation, reducing non-essential travel, easing pressure on public transport systems, and cutting energy costs as geopolitical tensions continue to rattle global markets.

But if governments or companies once again push for remote work, which sectors can realistically switch back immediately, and which cannot?

The answer lies in how digitally dependent, customer-facing, and infrastructure-heavy a sector is.

Sectors That Can Move To WFH Almost Immediately

Information Technology (IT) And Software Services

India’s IT sector remains the most WFH-ready industry in the country.

Software developers, coders, cloud engineers, cybersecurity analysts, AI teams, UI/UX designers, tech support professionals, and back-end operations teams can largely function remotely with minimal disruption. During Covid, companies such as Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services and Wipro proved that large-scale remote delivery was possible even for global clients.

Today, most IT firms already have hybrid systems, cloud infrastructure, VPN access, remote monitoring tools, and cybersecurity protocols in place. In many firms, employees still work remotely for part of the week.

This makes IT the fastest sector capable of switching back to near-complete WFH operations.

Media, Digital Journalism And Content Production

Newsrooms learned during the pandemic that reporting, editing, graphics, scripting, copy editing, digital publishing, podcasting, and social media management can all happen remotely. Television production still requires studio presence, camera crews, and field reporting teams. But digital media, web publishing, and editorial operations are largely cloud-based now.

Many national digital newsrooms continue to operate with partially remote editorial teams even today. Writers, video editors, anchors handling digital bulletins, SEO teams, and designers can resume full remote work within hours if required.

Banking, Financial Services And Insurance (BFSI)

Contrary to common perception, large sections of banking can shift online quickly.

While branch banking, cash handling, and customer-facing services require physical presence, back-office operations can function remotely. These include: Risk analysis, Compliance, Loan processing, Insurance claim verification, Digital payments monitoring, Customer support, Wealth advisory, Financial analytics, and Fraud detection units.

India’s massive digital banking ecosystem, powered by UPI, internet banking, and fintech integration, has already reduced dependence on physical branches for millions of users.

Private banks and fintech firms especially have remote-compatible structures today.

EdTech, Online Education And Training

This sector is naturally remote-friendly.

Teachers, trainers, curriculum designers, test-prep experts, language tutors, corporate trainers, and online coaching platforms can move fully online almost instantly. The infrastructure built during Covid still exists across schools, coaching institutes, and edtech companies.

Consulting, Legal And Corporate Advisory

Corporate lawyers, tax consultants, auditors, HR consultants, management consultants, and business advisory professionals can continue much of their work virtually through video conferencing, cloud collaboration, and digital documentation.

Court appearances and physical filings still require in-person work in many cases, but advisory functions are highly adaptable to remote operations.

Marketing, Advertising And Public Relations

Brand strategy, campaign planning, content creation, client servicing, digital advertising, influencer management, and PR coordination can mostly operate remotely.

Physical shoots, events, and on-ground campaigns would still require field teams, but the core planning ecosystem can shift online immediately.

E-Commerce And Customer Support

Warehouse operations and delivery services obviously require physical movement. But customer care, order management, catalogue teams, pricing analysts, marketing teams, seller support staff, and technology divisions can function remotely.

India’s e-commerce giants already operate with distributed teams across cities.

Sectors That Can Partially Shift To WFH

Government Offices

Many administrative functions can technically operate remotely, especially documentation, policy drafting, meetings, and digital approvals. However, public-facing departments, district administration, policing, and essential governance services still require physical presence.

Telecom

Network engineers and infrastructure maintenance staff must remain on the ground. But customer support, billing operations, sales coordination, and analytics teams can work remotely.

Education

Schools and colleges can return to online classes if necessary, but prolonged remote schooling remains controversial because of learning gaps and unequal digital access.

Sectors That Cannot Fully Shift To WFH

Some industries simply depend on physical infrastructure, machinery, logistics, or face-to-face interaction.

These include:

  • Railways
  • Hospitality
  • Healthcare
  • Retail stores
  • Agriculture
  • Mining
  • Transport and logistics
  • Factories and industrial plants

Doctors can conduct teleconsultations, and retailers can expand online delivery, but the core workforce in these sectors must remain physically present.

Why The WFH Debate Is Returning

The renewed focus on remote work comes as oil prices and fuel security concerns dominate global discussions following escalating tensions involving Iran.

The International Energy Agency had during past energy crises recommended measures such as reducing commuting, promoting remote work, and lowering non-essential travel to conserve fuel consumption.

India, which imports a major share of its crude oil requirements, remains vulnerable to global energy disruptions. That is why even a limited reduction in daily commuting by urban workers can significantly cut fuel consumption. In cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Chennai and Pune, where lakhs commute daily to IT parks and corporate hubs, even partial work-from-home adoption could reduce traffic congestion, fuel demand, and pressure on public transport systems.

Hybrid Work: The New Normal

Unlike 2020, companies no longer need to prepare for remote work. Most already possess the systems needed for hybrid or flexible operations. What may emerge now is not a complete return to lockdown-style work culture, but a targeted, sector-specific hybrid model aimed at conserving fuel while maintaining productivity.

And if fuel prices continue to remain volatile, India’s corporate sector may once again discover that the fastest way to save energy is simply to reduce the daily commute.
