Massive protests and large mourning rallies swept Ladakh following the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in joint US-Israel strikes.
Khamenei’s death in the ongoing conflict in West Asia has sent shockwaves through the Shia Muslim community in Ladakh, sparking an outpouring of grief.
In the capital city of Leh, thousands gathered to take part in solemn processions bringing the city to a standstill on March 1, a day after Khamenei’s death in ‘Operation Epic Fury’ was confirmed. Streets were filled with mourners dressed in black, a traditional sign of grief, as they marched in a collective show of sorrow and defiance.
Many were seen carrying symbolic portraits of the Supreme Leader while waving black flags. The demonstrations had emotional religious rituals, including traditional prayers and rhythmic chest-beating, which marked the beginning of a formal period of condolence for the region’s Shia population.
But, protesters also condemned his death, shouting anti-western slogans, specifically targeting the United States and Israel. These protests were intended to signal a clear message of solidarity with the Iranian government and its leadership during this period of transition.
Local religious and social organisations have been at the forefront of coordinating the response. The Anjuman Imamia, a prominent local group, officially announced the holding of funeral prayers in absentia (Gayibana Namaz-e-Janaza) and other special spiritual observances to pay tribute to Khamenei.
The unrest was not limited to Leh; a broader wave of protests has swept across the region with significant demonstrations reported in the districts of Kargil and Drass. These areas, which have substantial Shia populations and witnessed similar scenes of mourning and protest.
According to officials, despite the large turnout and charged atmosphere, the protests remained peaceful with no untoward incident reported from anywhere in the region. As the period of mourning continues, the region remains on high alert.
In Kargil, religious organisations announced a seven-day mourning period, including two days of processions to denounce the US-Israel military action on Iran. Special prayers were offered, and the groups said condolence gatherings will continue for 40 days at Jamia Masjid Kargil.
In neighbouring Jammu and Kashmir, too, security forces have been on high alert after the Shia community protested against Khamenei’s killing. Police and security forces imposed strict movement restrictions across all districts of Kashmir as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order following massive protests.
