Amid escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington, the Indian embassy in Tehran on Monday issued an advisory, asking all its citizens currently in Iran to leave the country by any available means of transport.
The advisory read as a continuation of the announcement on January 5, when the Government asked Indian nationals to leave during the Khamenei regime’s crackdown on the protests that took over the country.
“In continuation of the advisory issued by the Government of India on 5 January 2026, and in view of the evolving situation in Iran, Indian nationals who are currently in Iran (students, pilgrims, business persons and tourists) are advised to leave Iran by available means of transport, including commercial flights," the advisory read.
“All Indian citizens and PIOs should exercise due caution, avoid areas of protests or demonstrations, stay in contact with the Indian Embassy in Iran and monitor local media for any developments," the advisory read.
The Embassy has advised Indian citizens, including students, pilgrims, businesspersons and tourists, to exercise caution, avoid areas of protests or demonstrations, and remain in contact with mission officials while closely monitoring local media developments.
Indian nationals have also been asked to keep their travel and immigration documents, including passports and identification papers, readily accessible.
In addition, the mission has urged all Indians in Iran who have not yet registered with the Embassy to do so through the designated online portal. In case of internet disruptions, families in India have been requested to complete the registration on their behalf.
The embassy also issued emergency helpline numbers and an official email address to facilitate immediate support.
“The emergency contact helplines of the Indian Embassy are provided below: Mobile Numbers: +989128109115; +989128109109; +989128109102; +989932179359. Email: cons.tehran@mea.gov.in," it stated.
US-Iran Tensions
The advisory came amid looming fear of war in the Middle East and growing tensions between Tehran and Washington.
US President Donald Trump has told senior advisers that the United States could escalate military action against Iran, potentially including a broader campaign aimed at weakening or even toppling the country’s leadership, if diplomatic efforts and any initial targeted strikes fail to force Tehran to abandon its nuclear programme.
According to a report by New York Times, Trump has been leaning toward authorising an initial limited military strike in the coming days designed to demonstrate US resolve and compel Iran’s leadership to accept demands to give up the capability to develop a nuclear weapon.
The next round of talks between the two countries will be held on Thursday in Geneva, Oman’s foreign minister Badr al-Busaidi said on Sunday. He expressed hope that an agreement could be reached before the US considers an attack. The previous talk on Iran’s nuclear program was held in Oman.
Trump had repeatedly signalled an imminent strike on Iran with a massive military buildup in the region. Reports suggest that Trump is considering authorising a limited military strike on Iran to pressure Tehran into agreeing to his terms for a nuclear deal.
Meanwhile, Iranian students chanted anti-government slogans and scuffled with counter-protesters on Saturday in the latest display of anger at the country’s clerical leaders. The gatherings at universities, which were reported by both local and diaspora media outlets, followed a mass protest movement that was met with a deadly government crackdown last month.
