The Qatar Football Association (QFA) has postponed all domestic tournaments, competitions and fixtures with immediate effect amid escalating tensions in the Middle East following reported attacks involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
The suspension applies to every QFA-sanctioned event until further notice. Among the affected fixtures is the highly anticipated Finalissima between the Argentina national team, reigning Copa América champions, and Spain, holders of the European Championship, which had been scheduled for March 27 in Qatar.
Some reports said that the match, which would have seen a clash between Barcelona’s past and present — Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal — would be rescheduled. However, Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo reported that the respective federations remain committed to staging the Argentina–Spain encounter and are considering alternative arrangements, either in Qatar at a later date or at a different venue.
In an official statement issued via its social media platforms, the QFA said:
“The Qatar Football Association announces the postponement of all tournaments, competitions, and matches, effective from today and until further notice. The new dates for the resumption of competitions will be announced in due course through the Association’s official channels," the QFA posted on its official social media accounts.
Iran has launched a large-scale retaliatory missile and drone campaign across the Gulf following US and Israeli strikes, sharply escalating regional tensions.
Iran has launched a large-scale retaliatory missile and drone campaign across the Gulf following US and Israeli strikes on its leadership, dramatically escalating tensions in the region. Explosions have been reported in multiple Gulf capitals, with civilian infrastructure, airports and strategic facilities among the targets.
In Qatar, authorities said 65 missiles and 12 drones were launched towards the country. Most were intercepted, but eight people were injured, one critically. As host to the region’s largest US military base, Qatar occupies a sensitive strategic position, heightening concerns about its security exposure amid the expanding confrontation.
Across neighbouring states, casualties and damage have been reported, intensifying fears of a wider regional conflict. The Gulf Cooperation Council is convening to coordinate a collective response, as Gulf governments attempt to balance calls for de-escalation and diplomacy with the urgent need to safeguard civilian populations and critical infrastructure.
