Star England and Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Jarell Quansah might make a return to Liverpool, with the club trying to employ the buy-back clause to get their former footballer back, according to Sky Germany. He has been in fine form since leaving Liverpool last summer.
As per a report from Sky Germany journalist Patrick Berger, Liverpool have earmarked Quansah as a potential re-signing when the transfer window opens. The Reds are keen to bolster their centre-back options, even after striking a deal with Rennes for Jeremy Jacquet, who has since picked up a shoulder injury after confirmation of his summer switch to Merseyside.
Quansah joined Bayer Leverkusen last summer in a deal worth around €35 million, seeking regular first-team football. At the time, he wasn’t viewed as a realistic starter under Arne Slot and Liverpool were prepared to sanction his departure.
But Quansah’s 31 appearances across all competitions for Bayer Leverkusen have reignited interest from Liverpool. The Reds inserted an €80 million buy-back clause when Quansah was sold and are now prepared to trigger it.
The England international is viewed as a potential successor to Ibrahima Konaté, who is yet to commit his future to Liverpool. The French defender remains in contract discussions with the club, but talks have so far not been able to yield a breakthrough.
As per the British and German press, the transfer fee for Quansah went up to 40 million euros ($47 million), including 10 million euros in add-ons.
German outlet Kicker and The Athletic had reported that the deal also includes a €60 million buy-back clause, which Liverpool can activate from the summer of 2027 to bring Quansah back to Anfield.
He went on to become the most expensive signing in the history of Bayer Leverkusen, going past the club’s previous record set by midfielder Kerem Demirbay, who joined for €32 million in 2019.
