The Supreme Court on Tuesday likened the Rs 30,000 crore Kapur family estate battle to the Mahabharat after Rani Kapur, the mother of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, moved a fresh plea seeking to block moves to interfere in the functioning of the disputed RK Family Trust

While hearing a fresh plea by Rani Kapur in the ongoing dispute involving the RK Family Trust and other family members, Justice JB Pardiwala remarked, “We have entered into an arena. The Mahabharat will look very small. We will look into it."

In her plea, the 80-year-old mother of Sunjay Kapur sought directions restraining Priya Sachdev Kapur and certain other respondents from interfering with the functioning of the RK Family Trust until the mediation proceedings initiated by the court on May 7 are completed.

She also sought a stay on a board meeting scheduled for May 18, pursuant to the notice and agenda dated May 8 issued by Raghuvanshi Investment Private Limited, which holds a significant portion of the disputed family estate.

Justice Pardiwala took note of the submissions and listed the matter for hearing on May 14.

The matter came days after the Supreme Court appointed former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud as a mediator to settle the ongoing dispute between Rani Kapur and Priya Kapur over the Rs 30,000 crore worth assets of industrialist Sunjay Kapur, who died in London in June last year.

The top court also requested the parties– Sunjay Kapur’s wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur and his mother, Rani Kapur, not to make public statements or post about the family dispute on social media. It also said that all parties, including Sunjay’s children from his earlier marriage to actor Karisma Kapoor, should participate in the mediation proceedings with an open mind.

Prior to this, the Delhi High Court ordered the freezing of foreign bank accounts linked to the late industrialist, while granting interim protection over his estate.

The dispute centres around inheritance issues within the RK Family Trust. In her suit, Rani Kapur has alleged that the family trust was fraudulently created and used to transfer control of key Sona Group assets without her consent. She stated that after suffering a stroke in 2017, she was made to sign documents, including blank papers, under the pretext of administrative formalities.

Rani Kapur claimed she was the sole beneficiary of the estate of her late husband Surinder Kapur, founder of the Sona Group, and alleged that a “systematic fraud" resulted in her assets being transferred into the trust structure.

The dispute has become one of the most closely watched inheritance battles involving a prominent Indian business family. Actress Karishma Kapoor’s children Samaira and Kiaan objected to a will presented by Priya Sachdev Kapur, which she says was executed by Sunjay Kapur.
