Matrimonial & dating platform scams: Matrimonial and dating apps have gained significant popularity as platforms for people who want to establish relationships, seek companionship, and get married. However, owing to an increased dependence on technology, users of these apps have become vulnerable to scams. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), however, has alerted users of these possible frauds related to matrimonial or dating apps. In a latest post, the ministry, has alerted users of fraudsters using these apps. Accordingly, fraudsters have been using such apps to cheat users by building trust and asking users for money for different reasons by opening fake profiles.

In light of this rising incidence of cyber fraud, citizens are advised of emerging scams carried out on matrimonial and dating sites.
In fact, the National Cybercrime Threat Analytics Unit (NCTAU) has observed that scammers use stolen photographs of individuals to establish a false sense of attachment with those looking to establish genuine relationships or get into marriage.
Once scammers establish trust with victims by using photographs of themselves, they use these victims to invest in various scams such as cryptocurrency schemes.

Verify the identity of individuals thoroughly before engaging in personal or financial conversations.
Avoid sharing personal, financial, or identification details with online contacts you have not met in person.
Refrain from sending money or making investments based on online relationships.
Be cautious of investment advice or schemes promising guaranteed or unusually high returns.
Use reverse image search to check profile photographs and verify authenticity.
Any cyber fraud or suspicious activity should be reported immediately by calling 1930 or by visiting www.cybercrime.gov.in. Citizens are urged to stay alert and follow official advisories issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C).
