Deepak Gupta has assumed charge as Chairman and Managing Director of GAIL (India) Ltd with effect from March 1, 2026. A seasoned energy sector professional, Gupta takes over leadership of the state-owned gas major at a time when India is accelerating its natural gas infrastructure and energy transition efforts.

Who is Deepak Gupta?

Deepak Gupta, Mechanical Engineer from Delhi College of Engineering, has more than 35 years of experience across oil and gas value chain. His expertise spans project and construction management, contracts and global procurement, technology selection, business development, operations and maintenance.

Gupta joined GAIL as Director (projects) in February 2022 and is leading the execution of multiple high impact initiatives encompassing natural gas and LPG pipelines, gas processing units, critical SCADA infrastructure, green energy initiatives to achieve net-zero goals, setting national benchmark for Clean Energy adoption. He also oversees O&M of vast network of more than 20,000 km of natural gas and LPG pipelines, compressor stations and process plants. Under his leadership, GAIL completed Dabhol breakwater project of Konkan LNG Limited (subsidiary of GAIL) enabling all weather operations. He has pioneered many digital transformation initiatives enhancing operational agility and transparency in business areas.

As a board member of GAIL JVs viz. chairman of Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited and Green Gas Limited, chairman of Talcher Fertilizers Ltd. (India's maiden Coal Gasification based Fertilizer Complex), director, ONGC Petro-additions Limited (OPaL) and South-East Asia Gas Pipeline Company Limited (SEAGP), he has played a pivotal role in strategic goal setting, stakeholder alignment, corporate governance, future-ready business planning.

During his career spanning 32 years at Engineers India Limited previously, he led many large cross- functional teams to execute landmark Projects under complex and challenging conditions viz. world's largest single-train Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Complex at Nigeria, HMEL's Mega Petrochemical Complex at Bhatinda, GAIL's Petrochemical expansion at Pata. He also led the first greenfield refinery project in Mongolia, contributing significantly to India's global energy diplomacy.

Moreover, Gupta has also authored several technical papers/articles on critical packages and fast-tracking project execution. His ideas on project acceleration, digitisation and excellence have been institutionalised as best practices.

GAIL share price

Shares of GAIL closed at Rs 169.75 per share on Friday, February 27 -- which was 0.12 per cent below the previous close of Rs 169.95 apiece. During the day, the counter swung between Rs 171.50 and Rs 167.60 per share.

Notably, India is a constituent of BSE 100 index and enjoys a market capitalisation of Rs 1,11,612.32 crore.
