Telangana Government has decided to defer its decision to merge the Intermediate education with School Education for the time being. Admissions for intermediate colleges will continue as usual for the next academic year (2026-27) ending speculation since the past few weeks over the impending merger of intermediate education into general school education system.
Accordingly, admissions will start immediately without giving scope for students to face any challenges in this direction. The development follows Chief Minister and Education Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s view that there were various technical hurdles in the merger of the two which are unlikely to be overcome in the limited time available. Mr. Reddy said a decision on the issue would be taken only after holding a debate in the Legislative Assembly.
This puts on hold the Telangana Education Commission’s recommendation for abolition of the intermediate education system and replacing it with Class XI and XII on the lines of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The Commission’s recommendation was based on the emphasis on reducing drop out rate significantly . Telangana was still practising the old system of intermediate education as a result of which major chunk of students who completed X grade were not enrolling into colleges designated for intermediate studies and were discontinuing their studies, the Commission said.
The Chief Minister earlier suggested that the intermediate education could be integrated into school education rather than maintaining it as a separate entity to overcome the problem. With the Education Commission to favouring the same, an announcement was made in the past suspending admissions into intermediate courses creating anxiety among students and their parents alike.
However, the Chief Minister reviewed the technical issues and challenges associated with the proposed merger and decided to postpone the process temporarily. He wanted the officials to opt for extensive consultations with stakeholders as also to constitute a committee to formulate the State’s Education Policy by studying the issue and giving its recommendations.
