Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the launch of Micron Technology’s first phase of $2.75 billion ATMP (Assembly, Test, Marking and Packaging) facility in Gujarat strengthens India’s role in the global technology and semiconductor value chain, signaling a new era of strategic cooperation with the U S.

“The beginning of commercial production at Micron’s ATMP plant will strengthen India’s role in the global technology value chain. Today India is moving rapidly in becoming a part of a global semiconductor value chain,” Modi said while addressing a formal event held at Micron’s facility at Sanand located about 40 kilometers from Ahmedabad city.

The Prime Minister described the Micron facility as a symbol of India–US cooperation in AI and chip technology. “The Micron facility is an example of strong cooperation between India and the US. In AI and chip technology, the cooperation of the US and India is very important,” he added.

He emphasised that the ATMP plant is part of a broader government vision to build a pan-India semiconductor ecosystem, with additional projects underway in Dholera, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Odisha and Punjab. Drawing a parallel with Sanand’s transformation into an automotive hub after the arrival of Tata Motors, Modi said the Micron plant is expected to catalyse a similar high-tech industrial ecosystem in the region.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, who was present at the inauguration, reinforced the geopolitical and economic significance of the facility. He said India’s emergence as a semiconductor manufacturing hub is “not just welcome, but essential”. “As other nations aggressively expand production of legacy chips and seek to dominate the sector, India offers a secure and reliable alternative. Today marks India’s entry into the global semiconductor supply chain as a manufacturing nation. This is just the beginning,” Gor said.

He described the facility as a model of bilateral collaboration and supply chain resilience. “This facility represents the future. It represents American technology leadership working hand in hand with India’s manufacturing excellence. It represents supply chain resilience built on trust between our two great democracies,” the diplomat added.

Sanjay Mehrotra, Chairman, President and CEO of Micron Technology said the ground breaking ceremony for the $2.75 billion ATMP plant at Sanand was held in September 2023. “We poured enough concrete to fill 100 Olympic-sized swimming pools; used steel enough for building 3.5 Eiffel Towers and the backbone trusses that make this clean room weigh 24,000 elephants,” Mehrotra said while speaking at the launch ceremony. The semiconductor ecosystem has already started taking shape in Sanand. In August 2025, the first pilot line that will handle end-to- end chip assembly, packaging, testing and post-test services, became operational at a newly built Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Testing (OSAT) facility of CG Semi Private Ltd.
