Mumbai Water Cut: Thane and Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporations, which draw supply from BMC, will also face reduced flow from May 15.

Mumbai Water Shortage: Hotels, restaurants, and commercial establishments have also been put on notice to cut unnecessary usage.
Starting Thursday, BMC will slash water supply by 10 per cent across Mumbai — and neighbouring Thane and Bhiwandi — as reservoir levels sink to just 23.52 per cent of the city’s annual requirement. Officials blame a dry outlook tied to El Niño and Indian Ocean Dipole conditions, with no guarantee of early monsoon relief.
The civic body says there’s no cause for panic — Bhatsa and Upper Vaitarna dams hold additional reserve water — but the cut stays until the monsoon refills the lakes.
Will Your Area Be Affected?
Yes — the 10 per cent cut applies citywide, with no ward exemptions announced. Thane and Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporations, which draw supply from BMC, will also face reduced flow from May 15.
How Long Will This Last?
Until reservoir levels recover after satisfactory monsoon rainfall. No end date has been set.
What Can You Do Right Now?
Small changes add up fast. BMC is specifically asking residents to:
• Take bucket baths instead of showers
• Turn taps off while brushing or shaving
• Run washing machines only on full loads
• Fix leaking taps immediately — even a slow drip wastes litres daily
• Wash vehicles with a bucket, not a running hose
• Check that overhead tanks aren’t overflowing
Hotels, restaurants, and commercial establishments have also been put on notice to cut unnecessary usage.
What Happens If The Monsoon Is Delayed?
BMC says it is monitoring reservoir levels daily and will draw on reserves at Bhatsa and Upper Vaitarna. Further cuts, however, cannot be ruled out if rains arrive late or underperform.
