Tamil Nadu Government Formation: Amid continuous deadlock over government formation in Tamil Nadu following a fractured verdict in the 234-member Assembly, senior AIADMK leader M Thambidurai on Friday expressed confidence that the party would return to power in Tamil Nadu and Edappadi K Palaniswami will become the Chief Minister.
While speaking to reporters, the Rajya Sabha MP said that there was strong public sentiment in favour of the AIADMK returning to office.
“Wait and see. Edappadiyar is going to be the next CM, and he will deliver good governance. There is a public sentiment that AIADMK has to come to power. Whenever my leader Edappadi K Palaniswami visited people during the campaign, they showed their emotions. That may happen in due course of time with God’s grace," he said.
Without directly commenting on speculation over a possible post-poll understanding with rival DMK, Thambidurai indicated that multiple political discussions were underway. The senior leader also asserted that Palaniswami would provide “good governance" if he becomes Chief Minister again.
“So many discussions are going on. I cannot say anything now. We hope good things will happen. My party, my leader will come back," he said.
Actor-politician Vijay’s TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, while the DMK secured 59 seats and the AIADMK finished third with 47 seats. No party crossed the majority mark of 118 on its own.
TVK has already received support from the Congress, which won five seats, taking the alliance tally to 113. However, the combine still remains short of the majority mark.
The CPI(M) and CPI, which have two MLAs each, are holding separate meetings to decide whether to support TVK. If both parties extend support, the TVK-led bloc would reach 117 seats, just one short of a majority.
VCK, which also has two MLAs and was part of the DMK alliance, is expected to take a decision after a meeting of its high-level committee.
Meanwhile, the AIADMK has stepped up internal consultations as political parties explore possible alliance combinations to form the next government.
CPI(M) leader P Shanmugam said Vijay had formally written to his party seeking support and added that, constitutionally, the Governor should first invite TVK to form the government as it is the single largest party.
