Nationwide strike bring Thiruvananthapuram to a standstill

The 24-hour nationwide general strike called by most trade unions on Thursday against the Centre’s policies was near-total and disrupted normal life in Thiruvananthapuram. Despite isolated incidents, the agitation was largely peaceful.

Public transport services, commercial establishments and government offices were severely impacted by the strike. The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) did not operate regular services, except a few to Pampa for Sabarimala pilgrims, causing severe inconvenience to commuters.

Roads that are usually busy, especially around Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station and the Central bus station in Thampanoor, appeared largely deserted. Private vehicles were also seen in limited numbers. Several passengers who arrived from faraway places remained stranded for long. Some also reported difficulty in finding food due to the strike.

The City police conducted shuttle bus services from the railway station to the Regional Cancer Centre and Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology.

While the situation remained largely peaceful in the city, there were instances where strike supporters allegedly forced a few establishments to shut down after they attempted to open elsewhere. The protesters forcibly shut down offices and shops in Vembayam, Kattakkada, Pothencode, and Neyyattinkara.

In Neyyattinkara, a minor verbal altercation was reported between KSRTC employees who reported for duty and strike supporters. However, no major incidents of violence were reported.

Government offices, including the Secretariat, witnessed low attendance despite the State government declaring ‘dies non’ against employees participating in the strike. Educational institutions also remained closed. Essential services such as milk supply, newspapers, ambulances and fire services were exempted from the agitation.

Protest marches were organised in the city. A demonstration was taken out to the Kerala Lok Bhavan by various political parties and trade unions.
