The 23rd edition of the Commonwealth Games has begun in Glasgow on Thursday, July 23. The 11-day event will showcase will put spotlight on 10 different disciplines. Commonwealth Games have always brought glory to India in the form of medals, and the same will be expected from this iteration of the games. However, given the fact that the total number of games has been trimmed from 19 to 10, India's medal tally will be significantly impacted.
In the CWG 2022, India attained a total of 61 medals. This number can be considerably reduced as India's top medal-earning sports like wrestling, badminton, and table tennis are not part of the games this time.
Despite that, there are some key athletes who will shine bright like a diamond and raise the tricolour in Glasgow. India have sent a 126-athlete contingent focused on athletics, boxing, weightlifting, and others.
With 32 athletes, athletics offers India's best chances, especially in field events:
Others to note: Praveen Chithravel (Triple Jump, national record holder), Tejinderpal Singh Toor (Shot Put, multiple-time champion), Seema Punia/Kaliramma (Discus), Parul Chaudhary (Steeplechase/5000m), and race walkers like Priyanka Goswami.
- Boxing: Jaismine Lamboria (57kg, strong gold prospect), Sachin Siwach (60kg, recent international winner).
- Weightlifting: Bindyarani Devi (58kg, previous silver), plus emerging talents like Gyaneshwari Yadav and Nirupama Devi.
- Judo: Tulika Maan (heavyweight, previous silver and gold contender), Avtar Singh, Harsh Tokas.
- Lawn Bowls: Teams with history of medals (e.g., women's fours gold in 2022).
